Definition and Class Characteristics Under general supervision operates a transit vehicle over designated routes to transport passengers in a safe, courteous, and timely manner; and performs related transit work as required. This fully working level classification is distinguished from the Lead Bus Driver classification by the lack of supervisory responsibilities and level of experience and expertise required to perform the duties of Lead Bus Driver. Examples of Duties Essential: * Operates a transit bus over a designated route in accordance with arranged time schedules * Collects fares, picks up and discharges passengers at pre-arranged locations; monitors passenger behavior and maintains safe and orderly conditions aboard the vehicle * Provides information regarding fixed route and paratransit service to patrons and the general public; communicates with other operators and with base station via two-way radio * Attends required safety meetings and training * Performs special event and charter operations as directed * Conducts daily pre-trip and post-trip comprehensive mechanical and safety vehicle system checks including fluid levels, basic operating systems, and operation of wheelchair lift and secured equipment to the standards required under the complementary paratransit provisions of the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) * Performs transit dispatch duties as required. * May perform minor maintenance on vehicles and transit system infrastructure as needed, such as repair of floors, windows, seats; bus benches, shelters, and/or signage * Cleans transit vehicles, maintains all applicable boarding/mileage records & mechanical checklists * Establishes and maintains a good working relationship with fellow crew members, system staff, patrons and with the general public Knowledge and Skills Required Knowledge of: * Safe, defensive driving practices * California Motor Vehicle Code applicable to the operation of vehicles in public transportation * Basic maintenance of transit vehicles and related equipment * California Commercial Driver Handbook Skill in: * Operating a transit vehicle safely * Maintaining order among passengers on a bus * Good customer service skills * Understanding and implementing verbal and written instructions * Proper use of two-way radio system * Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with those in the course of work Education and Experience Required Completion of twelfth grade or receipt of G.E.D. and six months of experience in public transit, a school district transit operation, or driving a commercial vehicle. Possession of the following documents from the State of California: VTT Certificate, Passenger Endorsement Certificate, Class A or B Vehicle Operator's License, and Department of Motor Vehicles Medical Certificate/DL-51. Passenger transit driving experience preferred. OR Completion of twelfth grade or receipt of G.E.D., California Class A or B Vehicle Operator's License, and two or more years of commercial driving experience and a valid and current California DMV Medical Certificate/DL-51. Training toward the Passenger Endorsement Certificate and/or VTT Certification is available if required. Copies of requireddocumentationabove is required to be attached to during your application process. Send all documentation that is required in the scenario abovethat fits your experience. Licenses and Certificates: * A Vehicle Transit Training (VTT) Certificate evidences completion of required training administered either by a certified "Vehicle Train the Trainer" instructor or by a State of California Certified Instructor of the appropriate transit classification from the California Department of Education, Office of School Transportation * A Passenger Endorsement Certificate permits the licensee to operate public transit vehicles equipped with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating of 26,000 pounds or more. * All required licenses and certificates must be kept current and valid for the duration of employment * Possession of current and valid Certification for Operation of a School Bus is highly desirable * Possession of current and valid Certification for the operation of airbrakes is beneficial, but not required.
