SUPERVISES: There are no direct reports with this position.

POSITION SUMMARY: Under limited supervision, the Senior Accountant supports the Controller and Assistant Controller with a variety of internal and external reporting requirements and audits, financial analysis and general ledger maintenance, regulatory reporting and other accounting functions. Employees in the job class provide direct support to the Assistant Controller, day-to-day interface with accounting personnel, and accounting support to program managers and department leads. This job class requires knowledge of GAAP accounting standards, 990 tax returns, A-133 audits, nonprofit accounting and the ability to produce management information and regulatory reports.

TYPICAL DUTIES:1. * Works closely with the Assistant Controller and accounting personnel during month end close process.

    • Prepares various general journal entries and supporting analysis during the month end close process, including complex accruals.
    • Ensures revenue recognition in compliance with current accounting standards and contracting policies by preparing various general journal entries and supporting analysis during the month end close process
    • Analyzes and researches discrepancies and other issues in accounts and financial reports and recommends solutions for resolution.
    • Prepares monthly and quarterly account reconciliations to ensure accurate reporting and account ledger maintenance. Proposes adjusting entries, as necessary.
    • Provides back-up month end duties for other accountants, as needed.
    • Prepares the monthly consolidated financial statements and company financial statement including balance sheet, income statement and cash flows in accordance with GAAP.
    • Assists Assistant Controller in annual financial statement audit process. Prepares audit schedules as required.
    • Assists in preparations and calculations for the 990-tax return.
    • Primary responsibility for monitoring and consolidating the captive insurance program and related transactions, including an understanding of various insurance policies and coverages provided by the captive insurance program.
    • Manages and reviews federal grant accounting, including analyzing budgetary status of grants/awards, performing analysis of funding requirements for multiple program elements, ensuring compliance with provisions, regulations and guidelines, identifying potential deficiencies and communicating them to management, and supporting audits of programs, as required.
    • Researches technical accounting standards and disclosure requirements to ensure compliance with GAAP and tax requirements.
    • Maintains general ledger chart of accounts and financial reporting attributes in ERP system and other reporting systems.
    • Documents accounting policies, procedures and workflow for assigned areas of responsibility. Identifies process improvements and assists in the implementation of accounting enhancements to procedures and related systems.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Minimum of two years of public accounting experience plus three or more years of industry accounting experience;

  • Thorough knowledge of standard accounting systems and generally accepted accounting principles;
  • Knowledge of 990-tax returns and familiar with A-133 audits;
  • High degree of computer literacy of specialized software related to departmental operations including ERP accounting systems, and database;
  • Knowledge of Federal, State, and Local tax laws and regulatory requirements, including multi-state and non-profit requirement;
  • Knowledge of general departmental operations, organization policies, applicable laws, procedures, and processes;
  • Knowledge of accounting systems and processes as applied to a large organization;
  • Ability to create a variety of documents including financial reports, narrative analyses, and spreadsheets including graphical representations;
  • Ability to maintain a high level of accuracy in preparing and entering financial information;
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; to make presentations and respond to inquiries by management, team, vendors and/or customers;
  • Knowledge of business English including vocabulary, spelling, and correct grammatical usage and punctuation;
  • Demonstrated customer service, common sense, problem solving and analytical skills;
  • Demonstrated flexibility and adaptability to respond to changing work priorities and meet required deadlines;
  • Ability to act and operate independently and as part of a team with minimal daily direction from the Assistant Controller to accomplish objectives and solve a wide range of business problems;
  • Ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with all levels of employees, including team members, management and external entities to maximize performance and solve problems.


Bachelors in Business Administration or related field

A comparable combination of formal education and work experience will be considered.

Employees must have the ability to perform the following physical demands for extended periods of time with or without assistance:

  • Viewing computer screen/monitor Utilizing keyboard Answering phone/making calls


Work is performed in a normal office environment with limited privacy and some exposure to background noise.
